ENDLESS NIGHT
02:40
|
|||
Endless Night
my mind starts awake by an angry light
to behold a world both familiar and strange
sirens argue with an endless night
harlequins recruit the recently deranged.
I hitched a ride on highway’s revenge
dreamers stand paralyzed to behold
women forsake in an iron Stonehenge
where tears do flow into fountains – fountains of gold
beggars take heed to dig private holes
in tunnels deep under forbidden halls
jugglers and clowns walk invisible souls
through darkened streets lost to one –
darkened streets lost to one - one and all

IF I COULD WRITE A SONG
03:04
|
|||
If I Could Write a Song
if I could write a song - that held your hand when you were scared
(Can I write that song?)
let you know your dreams were shared
(Can I write that song?)
wrapped you in warmth when you are cold
(Can I write that song?)
I can write a song -
to give you comfort when you are old!
(Can I write that song?)
if I could write a song -
stop him drinking when you were young
(Can I write that song?)
with loving arms and silver tongue
(Can I write that song?)
let him stay there and love you true
(Can I write that song?)
if I could write a song –
that would solemn nights in dawn renew!
(I'd write that song and sing it to you my dear –
I'd write that song!)
I would write that song and sing it to you
until you came to know the end of fear! (Can I write that song?)
what is a song? - a sacred rhyme born from urgent need of heart
the night is long - no purpose there, just a soul and holy art
no right or wrong – when dream fills my eye you are the vision's start!
(the vision's start!)
I cannot write that song -
calms your tempest into a squall
(I cannot write that song) -
gives you Eden without a fall
(I cannot write that song) -
gives your life a strength ahead
so I wrote this song - I wrote this song instead
(break)
I cannot write that song - that gives your life a strength ahead
so I wrote this song - I wrote this song instead

DON'T LOOK AWAY
04:39
|
|||
DON’T LOOK AWAY
who is that woman standing there - her hair alight in flame?
with nothing but a soul to wear, you’d think i knew her name
is she my only sister? left home for fortunes fame?
don’t look away my sister - i shall recall your name
who is that old man lying there, a spreading ragged stain?
he melts across the sidewalk - a chalk painting in the rain
is he my old grandfather? once strong now slow and lame?
don’t look away grandfather - i shall recall your name.
prophets of the lonely night do pray
its time to see now time to say
don’t look away
who is that child frozen there - bathed in red liquid shame?
the people say its hard to tell, they all look the same
was this my son once full of laughter, in summers endless game?
don’t look away my little one - i shall recall your name.
who are these people stepping o’er the outlines of a ghost?
with eyes ahead and faces masked, a rushing onward host?
is this my neighbor marching past the broken empty lane?
don’t look away my neighbor - you might know his name.
they’ll take you down now if you dare to say
“prophets of the lonely night do pray -
don’t look away!"

SHELTER

SHELTER
I parked in front of the woman's rescue shelter on a deep yellow midnight
there's lotsa guys out there that prefer to belt her rather than just treat her right
(case you didn't know)
you suddenly appeared and asked me for a date. I said "I'll have to wait and see -
I must inform you I have a mate and she's the only one for me!"
(her) "Just take a closer look at my pretty face - I'm sure you'll change your mind!
I gotta get me some a that unholy freebase, so its 5 bucks for ultimate head!"
(him) well we just talked for a while and I scored you some food. I wan't tryin' to be crude,
like the fat dude you alluded to who screwed you and talked rude and black and blued you
and kicked you out in the street nude and wooed you back with 'ludes
and promises of better moods.
you left sayin' you was gettin' away from him - you were done with repeated sorrow
told me your name - I think it was Kim, you said you'd be back tomorrow.
a month later I heard a knock on my door. I opened it and found her all covered with sores,
beat up like someone was settlin' a score, till they couldn't hit her no more -
till it became a bore, her lips and eyes covered with gore, she was out of it -
stunned to the core, mumblin' and whisperin' about bein' poor, I could see that her mind was tore,
BRIGHT BLOOD covered every thing she wore, finally I knew it was that whore that I'd met who had swore
she weren't gonna take any more a bein' thrown to the floor
I took her to the rescue shelter on a deep yellow midnight
now there's lotsa guys out there that prefer to belt her rather than just treat her right

MYSTERY BOX HOUSE

|

Mystery Box House
Children don't laugh and birds don't sing
near the Mystery Box House
lovers looking for their rings
near the Mystery Box House
thunder folds upon itself
near the Mystery Box House
earthquake rocks continental shelf
near the Mystery Box House
it's been dark a thousand dawns
of the Mystery Box House
something lies beneath the lawn
of the Mystery Box House
nights are cold with comin's and goins
in the Mystery Box House
voice I know soft cries and moans
in the Mystery Box House
see the carousel and her upon it
in yonder bloodshot two-way mirror
through that door a beckoning pit
too deep to know too deep to fear
I hear caliopes brazen and proud
barely just outside your door
now they play so very loud
you cannot hear them any more
door opens in but never out
in the Mystery Box House
don't matter if you laugh or shout
in the Mystery Box House
you will not know what it's all about
it's your Mystery Box House

SOMEONE ELSE'S TROUBLES
02:25
|
|||
Someone Else's Troubles
why be hirin' elvis doubles
yer girl she likes the way they moan
why be blowin them giant bubbles
when they tear they can't even be sown
why buy someone else's troubles
when you can't even afford your own
why be lookin' through yer naighbors rubble
ain't naught there but empty stone
might as well frow yer hobo stubble
tis bettr for coverin' up your bone
why buy someone else's troubles
when you can't even afford your own
in this land nobodies in prison for their ideas
cause we're already imprisoned by our ideas
so you got to make the best of the rest day of your life
when the goin' gets tough
the tough eat their saddle
throwin' snake eyes for nine innings
in the back of your momma's sears catalog
gotta get up pretty in the morning to fool me...
remember my friend
if i was gonna eat you i'd a done it a long time ago

TUNNEL

|

Tunnel
killed two good men for a sack a coin
playin cards in Chicago
know where i been - not where i'm goin'
to the tunnel low
headed down below
crossed the track to the back a town
on the south of Chicago
don't need no map say i'm goin down
to the tunnel low
headed down below
spoils of war in desperate hands
it's a mystery to hold
came to the door of murmurin' lands
never felt that old
nor cryin' cold
finally my sack have nothin' to hide
on the south of Chicago
looked into my burden - now i'm inside
in the tunnel low
headed down below

POL POT-BELLY
06:02
|

POL POT-BELLY
rich man’s grown a Pol Pot-belly
hey little boy come spin the wheel
let’s watch souls melt into jelly
what’s it take to seal the deal, Red?
what’s it take to seal the deal?
the coins shine bright in the wishing well
but the black crow sings to the beggarman-watch out Sam it’s a urinal.
been seventeen years since I left home
but the black crow sings to the wanderer-
not yet Sam you must still roam.
It’s an endless day in the cloth of my sack
but the black crow sings to the prophet-hold up Sam you can’t go back.
I’m down, way down
got to wearin’ my clown frown
I got dry heaves
no way I’m gonna leave.
down, way down
got to wearin’ my clown frown
I got dry heaves
no way I’m gonna leave.
oh sing ye for the woman ages jailed
oh sing ye for the woman ages jailed
oh sing ye for the woman ages jailed
did god make kings to lead the war
or did kings make god to hide deaths door?
did god make rich men to give us more
or did the rich make gods to tame the poor?
look at he!
he an old burned tree
look at he!
he an old burned tree
a tweedle-dee-dee
a tweedle-dee-dee
he an old burned tree
an old burned tree
a tweedle-dee-dee
a tweedle-dee-dee
an old burned tree
an old burned tree
a tweedle-dee-dee
look at me! (etc.)
breech baby go on home
go on home breech baby go on home (random repeat)
had me a beer and i started making faces
dropped the mirror and it cracked in many places
put it out for the trashman to take away
had no doubt it'd be gone by noon that day
four hours later i went outside to check
ain't tryin' to rate her but she was a skinny damn human wreck
she were lookin' at herself in the broken glass reflection
she'd fallen off the top shelf and smashed in many sections
"is it for sale? it's just the thing i need!"
i said "your lookin' pale, for a penny it's yours indeed!"
"i'm getting some cash at 11 o'clock tonight,
and i'll be your honey if you bet your horses right!"
had me another beer and i started making faces
dropped the mirror again and it cracked in many places
breech baby go on home
go on home breech baby go on home (random repeat)
look at we! (etc.)

SIGHTLESS ARE THE WISE
04:13
|
|||
Sightless are the Wise
in mirrored hall of crystal days with precious thrones of light
my spine is bent another way - I ever seek the night
a magic rain wraps evening dew - no reason to ask why
I see a mirage face of you and touch the skin of sky
ghostly drums summon now the dawn - I ride a moon-wind near
the dream within a dream now sown with wanderers and tears
yet dive you still the undermind of city streets and cries
our broken dreams have made you blind - oh sightless are the wise!
you disappear into a notion
last bold flight o’er purple ocean
I look aloft as you go under
now I live in memory’s wonder
pearlescent eyes shine like a sea gem
bone-burnt waves dare now to hold them
if my death draws your lips to mine - my casket not a tomb
I’ll trade cruel life for sweeter wine – your kiss becomes my womb
oh sightless are the wise my friend and homeless are the rich
legless is the marathon and fortune digs the ditch
fame is just an ashen urn - eternity a joke
should my heart you never spurn - love frees me from this yoke
should my heart you never spurn - love frees me from this yoke

THIS MUCH WE KNOW

This Much We Know
seasons come and go
this much we know
love will ebb and love will flow
morning light does glow
this Much We Know
flowers live and die
under the sky
children play and children cry
rain comes by and by
under the sky
you set your heart aside
no compass guide
from love's truth you fairly hide
choir awaits the bride
no compass guide
in gray and fearful mist
you once were kissed
still you abide and do resist
what miracle is this
you once were kissed
heroes now are strong
not right or wrong
the phantom night is empty long
there's time for one last song
not right or wrong
seasons come and go
this much we know
love will ebb and love will flow
morning light does glow
this much we know

ROCKIN' THE CRADLE
16:14
|
|||
ROCKIN' THE CRADLE
In battle's lull before apocalypse foretold
came a human sight never to behold
shadowed by knights in blue chain mail
hordes of women in sack and veil
desert ocean filled with billowing sail!
they walked silent onto red streaming plain
a mysterious one said to all that remained:
"Unite our hands together as we are able!
"This war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
on both sides of your carnival show!
rockin' the cradle - taking the power! -
'till men learn the ebb and the flow!
"This war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
on both sides of your carnival show!
this war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
of civilization high and low!
"This war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
of civilization high and low!
this war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
of civilization high and low!
this war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
of civilization high and low!
this war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
of civilization high and low!
this war is over we're rockin' the cradle-
of civilization high and low!"
